Complete guide to choosing and deploying proxy detection
A practical route from connection classification to a useful product decision. The original ten buying questions remain here, with dedicated guides for deeper evaluation.
How Does a Layered Proxy Detection Check Work?
Begin with the connection seen by the trusted edge. Network intelligence classifies known exits, anonymizer services and address context. Current device or session observations provide another layer when the selected product supports collection. Account history connects those observations to the action being protected. None of these layers should silently substitute for the others.

Inspect explicit proxy types, source recency and the supported live evidence. Record a controlled baseline, then compare an authorized proxy route without changing unrelated variables. Repeat after rotation and distinguish an actual negative from an unavailable result. Header presence, one ASN or a timezone mismatch is insufficient as a complete detector.
Explore this question →What Is the Difference Between Proxy Detection, IP Geolocation, and Device Fingerprinting?
IP geolocation estimates where an exit address is registered or observed. Proxy detection assesses relaying and masking. Device identification correlates an observed device across supported events. A product may combine them, but an address location is not proof of physical user location, and a stable device identifier is not itself a fraud verdict.

Place the check at the protected event: signup, login, redemption or checkout. Retrieve the address from a configured trusted ingress, or use the provider’s supported device/session collection and backend result delivery. Keep private credentials on the server, associate the result with the relevant event and define timeout and quota-exhaustion behavior.
Explore this question →What Should You Do When a Session Is Flagged as a Proxy?
Interpret the finding with customer history, the action and corroborating evidence. A corporate VPN, shared mobile network and privacy relay can all serve legitimate users. Verification, review and restriction have different costs; document the reason for the chosen response and provide a recovery route. A network flag alone should not become a permanent account label.

Count the billing unit at protected events: lookups, credits, identifications or session assessments. ShieldLabs includes 5,000 free identifications and starts paid access at 99 US dollars monthly for 25,000 identifications. A focused lookup can start lower, but field entitlement and credit multiplication affect the comparison. Model peak days, retries, add-ons and annual invoices, not just a displayed monthly equivalent.

Rotating residential and mobile exits, IPv6 and legitimate privacy services make a fixed network label harder to use alone. Prepare the integration for product-version changes, recency tracking, documented unknown states and repeated evaluation. This is a planning horizon, not a promise about future detection coverage or a prediction that one signal will become decisive.
Explore this question →Which Proxy Detection Tool Fits Which Scenario?
Account-abuse prevention benefits from linked device, visit and account evidence. IP enrichment needs explicit types, known field semantics and a reliable lookup path. Network investigation may prioritize provider attribution; local processing needs a properly licensed dataset and a maintained update job. The alternatives page groups every scored supplier by these practical requirements.
Explore this question →What Should You Verify Before Buying a Proxy Detection Tool?
Request the exact output fields and plan, IPv4/IPv6 scope, residential/mobile coverage, collection requirements, error behavior and data freshness. Review a real invoice model at your workload. Then compare permitted labeled sessions and legitimate controls with timestamps and complete responses. A public checker alone cannot settle production suitability.
Explore this question →How Do You Check Proxy Detection for False Positives on Legitimate Connections?
Include home broadband, corporate access, mobile carrier NAT, shared Wi-Fi and privacy relays as separate legitimate cohorts. Count false proxy classifications separately from legitimate actions incorrectly restricted. Keep unavailable results out of negative-detection denominators and inspect differences across cohorts instead of relying on one aggregate agreement figure.

- Define the protected action and the consequence of a wrong result.
- Compare permitted proxy sessions with legitimate network controls.
- Record timestamps, unknown states and the full documented output.
- Check plan entitlement, peak usage and refresh ownership.
- Inspect user recovery and monitor outcomes after a change.
